view from the studio
"He brought me out into the expanse. He rescued me for he delighted in me." (Psalms 18:19)
shelter_expanse is a research and design studio based in tel aviv-jaffa, founded by Matanya Sack and Uri Reicher in 2012.
We specialise in integrative building systems and open spaces, cities and regions, based on research and mappings of the relationships between people and lands - structures and ecosystems, politics and myths.
Architects, landscape architects and planners work together on every project, combined with technical expertise by parametric modelling, gis, ecology and agronomy, together with theoretical, historical and applied research. Our work ranges from lightweight structures to spatial visions, from public spaces to fields, from gardens to nature reserves.
Clients include some of Israel's largest municipalities (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Be'er Sheva and Haifa), goverment agencies (Israel Land Authority), and developers. Our work has been published in media such as The Architectural Review, WIRED, Domus, and Haaretz.
Matanya is also an assistant professor at the faculty of architecture and town planning in the Technion, Haifa, where she founded and leads LandBasics programme. the territorial landscape design studio deals with fundamental issues in the Israeli landscape space through research-based design.
We wish to bring together structural, sustainable, performative design methodologies,
with an approach that is always ecological, political, mythical.
